Texas State University announced on April 6 that its women’s softball team will host the University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA) for the second half of the I-35 Rivalry on Tuesday night at Bobcat Softball Stadium. The game is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m.
The matchup is part of Bobcats Blackout Night, where fans are encouraged to wear black and will receive black pom-poms and rally towels. Tickets for the event are available through the university’s ticketing website. Before the game, head coach Ricci Woodard will be honored for her recent milestone—achieving her 900th career win as a head coach, which occurred during an away game against UTSA on March 31.
The Texas State Bobcats enter this contest following a strong performance last season, finishing with a record of 34-19 and winning the Sun Belt Conference Regular Season Championship. They were also named preseason favorites in this year’s Sun Belt Conference Coaches Poll. The team returns nearly all its pitching innings and most of its offensive lineup from last year, including standout pitchers Maddy Azua and Strood, who both hold top earned run averages in conference play.
Currently, Williams leads Texas State’s batting order with a .408 average, followed by another player hitting .336. Two additional players are also above .300 this season. In their latest series against South Alabama, Texas State secured a comeback victory in extra innings to improve their current record to 24-16.
UTSA arrives with a season record of 20-21 after dropping two out of three games against South Florida in American Conference play. Sabrina Wick leads UTSA’s offense with a .358 batting average while Arlette Hernandez anchors their bullpen with a 3.27 ERA over more than one hundred innings pitched.
Historically, Texas State has held an advantage over UTSA in their meetings, leading the all-time series by ten games and winning their most recent matchup decisively by an eight-to-one margin.
