Texas State defeated Arkansas State 8-3 on May 9 to secure a series victory at Tomlison Stadium. The Bobcats scored seven runs in the first two innings, building an early lead that held for the rest of the game.
The win is significant as it moves Texas State to a record of 30-21 overall and 12-14 in Sun Belt play, while Arkansas State falls to 28-21 overall and 11-15 in conference games. Early offensive production helped Texas State take control of the matchup.
“Really good job by our offense coming out and attacking, which allowed us to settle into the game. A lot of two-out RBI and a ton of barrels on the night,” said head coach . “Cade was typical Cade other than his fourth inning, but he made some big pitches to limit the damage. Now the goal is to bring the juice for an early game and get a much-needed sweep.”
The Bobcats’ starting pitcher struck out five batters over five innings, allowing three runs on six hits and earning his fourth win of the season. Tyler Weimer took the loss for Arkansas State after giving up five runs in the opening innings.
Relievers contributed with two scoreless frames, while additional pitchers each worked an inning apiece with O’Banan recording two strikeouts. At bat, Namken went 2-for-4 with two doubles and scored twice; Vossos drove in two runs; Salas drew two walks and scored twice; Stewart added an RBI single; Fryman contributed with key hits as well.
Arkansas State’s scoring came in their half of the fourth inning via back-to-back home runs from Derek Martinez and Lane Walton followed by a sacrifice fly from Ashton Quiller. Despite threatening again in later innings, Texas State turned its third double play of the night to end an eighth-inning rally attempt by Arkansas State.
The series concludes Sunday morning with an 11 a.m. first pitch.
