Hispanic students comprised the most prevalent ethnic group in Caldwell County schools in the 2023-24 school year, according to the Texas Education Agency.

Of the 8,617 students attending Caldwell County schools, 76.6% were Hispanic. White students were the second largest ethnicity, making up 17.5% of the total enrollment.

In the previous school year, Hispanic students also made up the largest ethnic group in Caldwell County, comprising 76% of the student body.

Leonard Shanklin Elementary School had the most even distribution of races among the schools in the county, which included 67.2% Hispanic students, 23.3% white students, 5.9% Black students, 2.8% multiracial students, 0.4% Asian students, and 0.3% Pacific Islander students.

When compared to the previous school year, total public school enrollment in the county increased by 2.1%.

“As a result, many districts in our very own Central Texas region are being forced to cut back on essential programs, services, consider school closures, and adopt deficit budgets just to provide students with the education that they deserve,” Hutto ISD Trustee James Matlock said.
