The Nature Center’s Star Party can help you unlock the unlimited wonders of the infinite universe
Have you ever gazed up at the night sky and wondered about the constellations and whether you’re looking at a planet, moon, or star? All that intergalactic information can easily get lost in space.
Maybe you’re just looking for something out of this world to do on a Friday night.
Enter the third annual Nature Center’s Star Party on Friday, Feb. 24, from 7-10 p.m. at the Gary Halter Nature Center. The free, family-friendly, come-and-go event features space-themed booths, activities, and stargazing.
Here’s a deeper look:
- Enjoy star gazing through high-powered telescopes provided by the Brazos Valley Astronomy Club. Club members will assist participants in understanding how to use telescopes and what’s visible over our post-oak savannah sky.
- Are you interested in creatures of the night? Learn what nocturnal friends call the night sky home. You can even fold an origami bat or owl to take home.
- See what constellations are visible and how to view them. Then, we’ll teach you how to use a star map and the cultural and modern uses for stars.
- Learn what wildlife depend on the stars and how to help improve the night sky at our light pollution booth.
- What bats are Texas natives? A master naturalist will be on hand to tell you which ones can be seen in our area and why they’re so awesome.
- Hear a star-themed story and learn about myths and legends of stars and celestial bodies.
- Galaxy-themed snacks and beverages will be available while supplies last to fuel your explorations.
- Space-themed games will bring those far-off ideas to your fingertips.
