Austin Chamber of Commerce issued the following announcement on Jan. 14
The Austin Business Journal recently published an article giving an overview of the extremely successful year the Austin region had for expansions and relocations.
Even with the economic impact from the COVID-19 pandemic, 2021 was a historic year for job growth in our region. Here is how 2021 stands when compared to previous years:
- #1 Combined number of relo/exp projects announced (228)
- #1 Combined jobs announced (26,697)
- #1 Expansion number of projects announced (138)
- #1 Expansion jobs announced (14,993)
- #1 Relocation number of projects announced (90)
- #2 Relocation jobs announced (11,704 – 718 short of best ever, which was 2020)
“Last year's massive wins included companies such as Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd., which is planning a $17 billion, 2,000-employee chipmaking plant in Taylor, and Amazon.com Inc.'s (Nasdaq: AMZN) continued expansion across the metro, which is positioning the company to perhaps become the largest employer in the region.
Elon Musk's Tesla Inc. (Nasdaq: TSLA) also relocated its headquarters to the Austin area, where its $1.1 billion electric vehicle manufacturing facility has developed at breakneck speed.”
These new companies provide new jobs and more opportunities for Austinites to raise families, achieve economic stability and give back to our community. The diversity of the jobs landscape contributes to a stronger, better Austin region, with a bolstered economy able to maintain its resilience through good times and bad.
