Sinus problems can be bothersome at any time of year, but the winter months can be especially tough for sinus sufferers, according to Dr. Cecil Yeung of Houston Sinus Surgery at the Yeung Institute.

The winter weather doesn’t directly cause you to get a cold, but by being inside more often, there are more chances to spread germs that could lead to a sinus infection.

There are also things like candles and other fragrances in the winter months that can cause allergy or sinus symptoms. For those who have a Christmas tree or wreath in their home, the tree could be harboring dust and mold that can irritate sinuses as well.

“The same is true of an artificial tree or ornaments that have been stored away in a musty basement or attic,” Yeung wrote.

Another cause could be the dry air that winter brings, especially when you're indoors with the heat on. If you have a pet, it will surely be inside more in the winter, which could create a buildup of hair and danger in the home. Allergens can be found in carpet and upholstered furniture as well.

It is also recommended to decrease your alcohol consumption, as it can cause skin inside the nose to swell.

Some of the most common symptoms of a sinus infection are a runny nose, nasal congestion, a headache, facial pain, thick and discolored drainage from the nose and down the throat, and a reduced sense of smell and/or taste.

Yeung recommends several ways to help reduce the effects of winter sinus issues. One is to simply avoid catching a cold by eating right and getting enough sleep. Washing hands frequently and avoiding touching your mouth and nose can also help keep germs at bay.

If you have carpeting, changing your flooring to hardwood or tile could provide relief from allergies and sinus issues. If that isn't possible, clean your carpet thoroughly on a regular basis. Store an artificial Christmas tree or wreath in a dry place to avoid the appearance of mold.

Using allergen-proof covers for mattresses and pillows can help, as well as washing bedding frequently.

“And if you have pets, don’t let them sleep with you,” Yeung added.
