City of Killeen issued the following announcement on Nov. 24
Family, friends and volunteers needed for annual Wreath Project.
The Friends of the Central Texas State Veterans Cemetery will lay more than 9,000 holiday wreaths at Central Texas State Veterans Cemetery Saturday at 10 a.m. The event will continue in the event of rain, and the public is encouraged to participate.
To comply with social distancing restrictions and health safety protocols, masks will be required for all participants. The ceremony will be shortened, but all will gather at the assembly area to allow family and friends of those buried at the cemetery to lay wreaths for their loved ones first. Volunteers will then lay wreaths at all remaining graves.
The weather forecast predicts rain the day before and the day of the ceremony, which will severely limit parking at the cemetery. Participants are encouraged to use the park and ride system to attend. Parking is at Texas A&M University – Central Texas on SH 201. The number of buses has been doubled to increase efficiency while transporting passengers to and from the cemetery between 8 a.m. and noon.
Motorcyclists may participate in the wreath escort to the cemetery. Riders should meet at 7 a.m. Saturday at Killeen Special Events Center, 3301 S. WS Young Drive.
