City of Killeen issued the following announcement on April 29
Killeen Parks and Recreation and Harker Heights Parks and Recreation announce the cancellation of the 2020 Central Texas Youth Sports League softball and baseball season.
Governor Greg Abbott issued his plan to phase the reopening of Texas April 27, and the plan includes limiting outdoor athletic events to no more than four participants. Killeen and Harker Heights agree that it is in the best interest of the community to cancel this year’s season. This decision is consistent with Texas Public Schools and the University Interscholastic League (UIL) cancellations of all spring classes and sporting events.
Cancellation of youth softball and baseball was not a decision made easily. The current COVID-19 situation does not allow for the safe gathering of teams for practices and games, and the health and safety of participants must be prioritized.
All registrants will receive a full refund by mail to the address used at registration within four to six weeks. If that address has changed, please contact your Parks and Recreation Department as soon as possible to update the information.
More than 1,200 registrations were received for the 2020 league. Both departments will work diligently to process refunds in a timely manner, and patrons are asked to be patient while refunds are issued.
Killeen and Harker Heights are exploring alternative programming for the athletes missing out on this sports season. Both departments look forward to offering future programs to the community in a safe and fun environment.
