A Hill Country city has given its renters a reprieve in light of the COVID-19 outbreak.

The San Marcos City Council passed an ordinance that will provide tenants an extension to pay their rent. According to Community Impact Newspaper, renters have 90 days to pay their delinquent balance before landlords can pursue evictions. The emergency ordinance also requires landlords to give tenants a notice of proposed eviction along with a statement informing them of their right to the 90-day window.

The measure, which garnered the City Council’s unanimous approval, followed the Texas Supreme Court’s ruling halting residential evictions statewide in response to the economic shutdown stemming from the coronavirus pandemic.

The ordinance will last as long as the city’s local disaster declaration.

As of April 25, Texas reported 23,773 confirmed cases of the coronavirus, including 623 deaths. Hays County has 148 confirmed cases of COVID-19.
