Hays County Historical Commission meets; discusses committee updates and local school demographics

The Hays County Historical Commission held a meeting on February 26, 2026, at the Kyle Railroad Depot and Heritage Center in Kyle, Texas. The session was announced in accordance with the Texas Open Meetings Act.

The agenda included roll call, citizen comments, and reports from several committees. Linda Coker provided the chair report. Committee updates were given by Sally Rodriquez for the Cemetery Committee, Lila Knight for the CLG Committee, Patrick “Hoot” Gibson for the Depot Committee, and Nico Costilla for the Under-Represented Communities Committee. Anthony Davis also presented updates before adjournment.

Recent data from Hays County schools show that during the 2023-24 school year, there was a 4.3% decrease in at-risk students compared to previous years, totaling 19,630 students (https://tea.texas.gov/). Despite this decline, Hays County ranked as having the 24th highest total of at-risk student enrollment among Texas counties (https://tea.texas.gov/).

Demographic information from local schools indicates that Hispanic students made up the largest ethnic group during this period. There were 24,939 Hispanic students enrolled—56.5% of all students—while White students comprised 35.5%, with a total of 15,677 enrolled (https://tea.texas.gov/).
